SF360 Film+Club, the Film Society's monthly social screening series, is back at Mezzanine on Monday, September 22, with Wild Combination, Matt Wolf's documentary about avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist and disco producer Arthur Russel. The film captures the beauty, complexity and troubled genius that marked Russell's life and work. Throughout the night, DJ Johnny Ray Huston will spin from his personal collection of Russel tracks.

Tickets are $8 for year-round Film Society members ($12 for general public), and you can buy them now.

Tickets are on sale to SFFS year-round members only and will go on sale to the public on September 9 at https://www.trilogyticketing.com/sffs/.

Sales will be cash only at the door.

Doors will open at 7:00 pm with the screening starting at 7:30 pm.

Part of the '70s art scene in New York, Russell collaborated with composers like Philip Glass to produce achingly beautiful cello recordings and also became musical director of famed art space The Kitchen. All the while, he composed some of the juiciest underground dance tracks around ("Is It All over My Face," "She Bang"), spurring the sound that eventually defined the burgeoning disco scene and nightclubs like Studio 54. Wolf's deft direction captures the anxious excitement of New York in the late '70s and early '80s, giving a well-rounded view of Russell's complicated life including his multifaceted talents and the self-defeating perfectionism that held him back. Russell died of AIDS in 1992, and his name and music fell into relative obscurity, but this compelling portrait will no doubt add to Russell's rejuvenated fan base and reintroduce us to someone we should all know.

Then there is the Artists Ball... it felt as if we'd scaled the mountaintop and glimpsed the gala future. — Catherine Bigelow, San Francisco Chronicle
