Music, Martinis, and Memories

Maybe you already know North Beach was nationally famous in the 1940s and '50s as a place to see male and female "impersonators." Maybe you don't: Ask any grandfather-aged former serviceman who was stationed on the West Coast during that time, and he'll tell you alllll about Finocchio's. Either way, the tradition gains new life as Veronica Klaus, local transgendered canary, continues her Tuesday-night residency at a jumping nightspot. Vintage jazz and Broadway inform her warble, but we hear some James Taylor soul and a certain heartbroken grit in her songs. Klaus' accompanying crackerjack trio features Tammy L. Hall on a piano that can really hold its liquor. Ultimately the mix is sweet, classy, un peu triste, and all Veronica.
