Let's Jam

Let's Jam

All you need to know in order to be a responsible audience member at the Mitch Marcus Session Four-Year Anniversary Show is this: Clap for the solos you like. For complete jazz innocents, let's explain: A solo is when one instrument is prominent, and slightly louder than the others. What the player in question does during this time has often been described as "cats howling on the alley fence," which makes no sense in our alley-cat-free era. The sonic chaos can be a little surprising to a first-timer, though, so try this: Think of the soloist as a high-diver, and consider the steady bass, reliable drums, and warm guitar to be both pool water and diving board. The musician's job is to show off as many twists and turns as possible in the space between the notes. Those explosive, surprising fireworks make jazz (here, it's bebop. Or postbop. Whatever — it's mostly bop-related) into the complex, satisfying brew it is. Marcus, a gifted and talented tenor saxophonist, welcomes his own high-class crew including bass player George Ban-Weiss, guitarist Mike Abraham, Sylvain Carton on saxophone, and drum machine Sameer Gupta, but he also wants you. The Session is a jam, man. Bring your ax if you were sneering through the first few sentences, and join the hip and jazz-mad scene.
